Association of Official Seed Analysts.

The Association of Official Seed Analyst (AOSA) is an organization of member laboratories dedicated to education and research, including state, federal, and university laboratories from the United States and Canada.

AOSA formally organized in Washington D.C. in 1908, developing rules and procedures for seed testing and the standardization of their interpretation (in conjunction with the Federal Seed Act)

Society of Commercial Seed Technologists.

The Society of Commercial Seed Technologists (SCST) is an organization of professional seed technologists dedicated to research, proficiency and improvement in seed testing from private, and company laboratories across the United States and Canada.

SCST originated in 1922, largely as a liaison between The Association of Official Seed Analysts (AOSA) and The American Seed Trade Association (ASTA).

Register for the upcoming Germination Testing Week this April 24-27, 2023 at Iowa State University.

During Germination week, participants gain experience evaluating seedlings of 16 species (crops, vegetables, flowers grasses, etc.) using the warm germination test, plus working with the cold test, accelerated aging test, tests for biotech traits (herbicide bioassay, immunoassay), tetrazolium and more. A popular and unique highlight of the week is a three-hour session of moving between stations for hands-on work in the Germination lab.

The USDA Agricultural Marketing Service (AMS) is hiring a Supervisory Seed Marketing Specialist (Regulatory). Within the Science and Technology Program's Seed Regulatory and Testing Division (SRTD), you will assist in administering the Federal Seed Act (FSA) to enforce regulation and maintain a comprehensive, nationwide, seed monitoring program. Under the Division Director you are responsible for overseeing, directing, and coordinating the regulatory, operational, and administrative aspects of the program within SRTD.

This course will provide an opportunity for participants with experience in Purity Analysis to see species which they may not typically encounter in the lab or to study for the AOSA/SCST Purity Exam, which will be offered at the end of the week.

For more than 100 years, the Seed Lab and the Seed Science Center at Iowa State University have provided training for seed industry professionals by hosting short courses and workshops. Each April through August Seed Conditioning Specialist Alan Gaul and Seed Lab Manager Mike Stahr facilitate workshops covering topics ranging from seed testing and cleaning, to gravity separation, color sorting, and seed treatment.

The 2023 Seed Analyst Short Course is right around the corner!

You may attend one or both weeks (Purity & Germination). Cost for attending one week is $500 and for attending both weeks is $900. Registration cut-off is one week before start of Purity Weeks (April 17) and two weeks prior to the starting date of the start of Germination Week (April 24). A waiting list will be set up for each week for the possibility of adding participants based on circumstances.

NOTE ABOUT AOSA & SCST CONSOLIDATED EXAMS: You MUST qualify to take either or both exams. This is done by contacting the AOSA or SCST Administrative Office.
