Remembering Gary Cook

We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of retired Seed Lab Manager Gary Cook. Gary dedicated more than four decades of his career to the Illinois Crop Improvement Association, leaving behind a legacy of excellence, professionalism, and commitment to the seed industry.

Gary joined ICIA in 1976 after graduating from Western Illinois University. From the beginning, he brought valuable experience gained while working at Mountjoy Hybrids in Atlanta, Illinois, where he learned the fundamentals of seed production and conditioning. His production background gave him a clear understanding of the need to produce high-quality seed, which he validated with his work in the laboratory.

Known for his photographic memory and attention to detail, Gary excelled in seed identification and testing. He achieved the designation of Registered Seed Technologist (RST) on his first attempt—a notable accomplishment given the difficulty of the exam. In 1989, he became Manager of the seed lab, guiding its operations through growth and change while maintaining a strong commitment to accuracy and reliability.

Gary played a key role in expanding Illinois Crop’s testing services and in shaping approaches that remain foundational today. For example, under his leadership he refined our vigor testing methods, emphasizing cold tests that incorporated soil to better reflect the challenges of field conditions.

After a remarkable career, Gary retired in 2019 as Chief Analyst at Illinois Crop Improvement. His professionalism, knowledge, and dedication helped build the reputation our seed lab continues to uphold today.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to Gary’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of working with him. His contributions to ICIA and the seed industry will not be forgotten. Information on arrangements and memorials can be found at the following link.
